Transient over voltages are severe voltage increases, with a very short duration, between two or more conductors. Their effects range from a slight momentary interruption in service up to the total destruction of sensitive equipment. Overvoltages enter the equipment via power supply lines, telephone lines, data lines, etc., which means that the origin can be far-off lightning flashes or, very often, lightning between clouds.

Electrical power switching and sudden short-circuits cause similar effects, although these are generally less harmful.

The aim of the Surge Protective Devices (SPD) is to reduce the overvoltage to a level that causes no damage to the protected equipment, and to conduct the current to the ground via a safe path. They should be installed where lines enter the building and directly protect the equipment that can be connected to the earth termination system. The connection should be as straight as possible and far enough away from the protected signal.
